What Our Clients Say Matters
I have worked with Philip Ralph of TLS as an Executive Coach for the last 1.5 years. This has been part of an Executive Team development program that he co-facilitated. Whilst I enjoy the team based sessions and find these to be really valuable, Phil’s particular combination of wisdom, practical experience and empathy allows him to be an exceptional coach. With his coaching and guidance I have evolved as both a manager and a leader. This experience has allowed me to deepen my self-reflective practice, refine my system level diagnostic skills, strengthen my influencing tactics and evolve my understanding of the work of leadership to new levels. This work has allowed me focus on what is core to my purpose, of enabling and empowering others and creating the conditions that allow them flourish whilst I continue taking the steps up to be a high impact authentic leader.

I first met Phil when he was engaged to facilitate a team-building activity, and was subsequently lucky enough to be offered the opportunity to complete the MEWS survey [GLWS survey, formerly known as MEWS] with him. Looking back, I came to this process with a lot of ego, a lot of blame, and a lot of sadness, anxiety and anger. Phil has the rare ability to call your attention to the elements of your life that are out of balance – and your own part in that imbalance – without judgement or blame. Phil’s gentle, humorous, but ultimately straight-talking approach has enabled me to examine the assumptions I’ve made about the level of control I have over my life and to see it in a completely different light.
Consequently, I’ve had conversations with colleagues and family members that have radically changed relationships for the better, I’ve challenged my own beliefs about myself and my life, and I feel much more in control of the things I do each day. Even better – I understand why I do them and the impact they have on myself and those around me. I am deeply grateful to Phil for stretching my understanding of what I was capable of, and for helping me to see that there was a happier, calmer, more fulfilled me within reach – I just had to let her out.

As principal investigator of clinical studies into new treatment for leukaemia and lymphoma, I had not given much thought to my leadership skills, which is something you were not taught at medical school or during specialty training. This course has opened my eyes to how harnessing my leadership and coaching skills can help me be even more efficient in leading my teams as we made new discoveries and influence how leukaemia and lymphomas is treated. I believe I am a more effective leader and investigator as the result of this course.

This was an excellent course. The coaching was tailored to my individual needs, and the teaching material in our group sessions was also highly specific to the challenges facing our organisation and our group of leaders. We also learned general principles which I have already found invaluable in the other areas of leadership outside my organisation. Roderick and Phil were respectful, entertaining facilitators and coaches, and after just four group sessions I feel we have developed further both as a team and as individuals than I thought possible. I would highly recommend this course to others who are facing leadership roles, organisational change, and who acknowledge that we can all grow further and learn more about leadership.

I worked with Phil as my Coach over 9 months to improve my effectiveness as an operational manager. His approach is that effective change and development needs to come from the individual, not the coach. Consistent with this, Phil required me to engage and commit to concrete actions, providing guidance, theory and active questioning to ensure that I was accountable for the outcomes of the coaching engagement. I am grateful for Phil’s contribution to my personal and professional development, and have taken forward good habits and embedded change from our work together.

“In 2011, one of our clinical departments was not functioning as it should. Staff were de-stabilised and recruitment and retention strategies were being compromised as a consequence. Employee engagement scores were consistent with the anecdotal evidence. I was determined to utilise the skills of the Leadership Sphere, specifically Phil Ralph, with a view to facilitating a team-building program for the management team. The objective of the program was to re-affirm the purpose for being and to articulate agreed values and processes to enable the intended outcomes. With each session, evidence of increased engagement was noted, through increased participation, healthy debate and confrontation of the real issues. By the end of the exercise, the team was well on the way to shedding its dysfunctional tag and began setting clear and attainable goals. These included agreement on behaviours and holding each other to account on these.
A subsequent engagement survey validated the improved feel in the department and importantly recruitment and retention aspirations were realised. This is objectively measured by the reduced use of expensive casual staff, which has declined from 17% to approximately 5%, with monthly labour savings of $30000. I would happily engage The Leadership Sphere for similar contracts should the need arise. I would be pleased to be contacted if desired”.

“We have been working with the TLS team for over 4 years now. Initially they worked with teams and groups across the entire organisation during our Cultural Transformation program “New Beginnings”. During this process the TLS team were able to engage our staff at all levels to deal with and address burning issues, past and present, and assist the Hospital’s Leadership Team to take the organisation to a new level in terms of its culture. As a direct result of this program our Staff Satisfaction increased 60% on previous surveys and was at the 80th percentile compared to like organisations. This level of satisfaction has been maintained at the same level over the past two surveys.
In more recent times TLS has been working with our Executive Team and our Senior Leadership Group (Middle Managers) on a range of issues around both their management and leadership effectiveness and how their attitudes, behaviours and approaches links to and enhances or detracts from the organisation’s Mission, Vision and Values. As a result of this work there has been a palpable and positive change in attitude and approach as the Hospital’s Leadership Team’s skills and performance has grown. It is fair to say that TLS has had a significant impact on our culture and our leadership. We greatly value the relationship we have developed with Phillip Ralph and the TLS team and look forward to continuing this as we continue our growth as an organisation.”

“My coaching experience with Phillip was a significant change experience for me. With Phil’s guidance I was able to observe how my leadership style was impacting both positively and negatively on my organisation and, more specifically, on my peers and direct reports. Through a careful and thorough investigation together, supported by guided research and reading, I have developed and begun to implement an action plan which will see me become a more highly effective leader (in all aspects of my life and work) while ensuring that others that I can, and do, influence at all levels of the organisation, enhance their leadership capability. I came out of the experience with significantly greater confidence in my own abilities as well as a range of new practical leadership skills which I am putting into practice.”

“We engaged The Leadership Sphere team in 2008 with a series of conversations with our Executive team. To single out one defining feature of our partnership is difficult to do. The consultants have successfully facilitated a range of programs with our people aimed at renewing and celebrating the great things about being a part of the team. In framing the workshop contents, the facilitators worked with us to get to the improvements in communication and teamwork that we are seeking at all levels of the hospital. They worked in a warm and intuitive way.”

“I didn’t expect that this session would have the energising impact on me that it has had. I thought I would suffer through 2 days of ‘more coaching models’, but I am leaving a better, energised coach and person. Thank-you! The best ‘final’ session in 20 years of training!! Really effective.”
Participant, Leader as Coach
“I have recently had the opportunity to participate in an Executive coaching program with The Leadership Sphere. I was very enthusiastic about participating in the program and upon commencing I quickly realized that this was no ordinary leadership program. The differentiator between The Leadership Sphere and other organizations is clearly the skill and integrity of the coaches, depth of information and tools and the impactful one on one coaching sessions. The coaching sessions provided me with thorough diagnostics and then challenged me to analyse my leadership strengths rather than just focusing on my perceived development opportunities. I was encouraged to ‘let go’ of some long held negative behaviors and beliefs, no mean feat! I was energized and engaged by the empathetic, humanistic style and structure of the one on one coaching sessions and looked forward to my sessions with enthusiasm. The program had a profoundly positive impact on me and as a result, I have sharpened my approach to goal setting, increased my self-awareness and rediscovered the importance of positive internal dialogue. I highly recommend The Leadership Sphere to any company that wants to transform into a high performing organisation and realize the full potential of its leaders through a program that is inspiring, motivating and above gets results.”

“You will be pleased to know I had a 3 hour fierce conversation today. OK – so at 3 hours you might suppose my wrap-up needs some work, but it was indeed an intense session. Throughout the entire session(which included copious tears etc), I found myself going back to the GROW model and it really helped! In particular, I think the ‘what else’ on OPTIONs worked wonders for me… in the end, I found my internal dialogue saying “thank god we had the training last week” as we trawled through the trials of branch life. Thank you so much for giving me the tools to do this.”

“Phillip is a fantastic business coach who has a great combination of professionalism, track record and personal, down to earth qualities that enables him to be very effective. I found that his combination of tools (for me, the LSI and some questionnaires) combined with interactive discussions assisted me in understanding my strengths, weaknesses, and importantly – ‘who I was being’ to the other people in our organisation. I found that Phillip was able to ‘look in from the outside’ to see what was really going on for me and others in our team, and through a series of interviews, briefing sessions and other activities we have been able to dramatically increase the collaboration between myself and the broader SMS team and obtain significantly better results from it. These interactions are largely free of angst and upset, and each member of the team now understands that I have significant respect for them and what they do, and visa versa.
I would recommend Phillip to any individual or organisation that is looking for someone who has an ideal mix of professionalism, and who is also a great bloke.”

“I found every component of the Leader as Coach Workshop valuable and have taken away more practical tools to use in the workplace from this workshop than any I have ever attended in the fifteen and a half years I have been with the bank. The Polarity Management Model was particularly pertinent to my team’s situation.”
District Manager, Victoria (Retail Bank)
“The change process has been difficult for my new managers to come to terms with, however by using the (change) model they have now been able to come to the conclusion that the future is not so scary, and that a lot of the positives from the past can be carried forward. It was also an excellent opportunity for me to better understand what the negatives were with the past (so that I can avoid repeating) and to put to rest some of the perceived negatives moving forward. All in all a great exercise that has helped tremendously with ‘breaking the ice’ with my new team and taking the first step positively into the future. Thanks again.”

I just wanted to say that the information I gained over the two days has and will make an immense change to my approach (moving away from the ‘Mrs. Fixit’ approach)…everything that you said made sense and I already plan to do a ’cheat sheet’ to be used before I implement any further changes and before I go into ‘difficult’ meetings.
