As principal investigator of clinical studies into new treatment for leukaemia and lymphoma, I had not given much thought to my leadership skills, which is something you were not taught at medical school or during specialty training. This was an excellent course. The coaching was tailored to my individual needs, and the teaching material in our group sessions was also highly specific to the challenges facing our organisation and our group of leaders. I worked with Phil as my Coach over 9 months to improve my effectiveness as an operational manager. His approach is that effective change and development needs to come from the individual, not the coach. “In 2011, one of our clinical departments was not functioning as it should. Staff were de-stabilised and recruitment and retention strategies were being compromised as a consequence. Employee engagement scores were consistent with the anecdotal evidence. I was determined to utilise the skills of the Leadership Sphere, specifically Phil Ralph, with a view to facilitating a team-building program for the management team. The objective of the program was to re-affirm the purpose for being and to articulate agreed values and processes to enable the intended outcomes. With each session, evidence of increased engagement was noted, through increased participation, healthy debate and confrontation of the real issues. By the end of the exercise, the team was well on the way to shedding its dysfunctional tag and began setting clear and attainable goals. These included agreement on behaviours and holding each other to account on these.
A subsequent engagement survey validated the improved feel in the department and importantly recruitment and retention aspirations were realised. This is objectively measured by the reduced use of expensive casual staff, which has declined from 17% to approximately 5%, with monthly labour savings of $30000. “We have been working with the TLS team for over 4 years now. Initially they worked with teams and groups across the entire organisation during our Cultural Transformation program “New Beginnings”. During this process the TLS team were able to engage our staff at all levels to deal with and address burning issues, past and present, and assist the Hospital’s Leadership Team to take the organisation to a new level in terms of its culture. As a direct result of this program our Staff Satisfaction increased 60% on previous surveys and was at the 80th percentile compared to like organisations. This level of satisfaction has been maintained at the same level over the past two surveys.
